It's hard to escape knowing Sirius Black, whether you love him or hate him. It's also nearly impossible to have lukewarm feelings for him. He is outgoing and always pushing himself (and his friends) into the spotlight. He enjoys it there, loves thinking on his feet, and laughs often. No reproaches change his manners, though he won't do more than flirt without permission.

He is fiercely loyal to his friends. Cross one, and he will hex you into oblivion with a clean conscious. And he'll laugh while doing so. Even when seriously thinking, he never looks like he does. Thus, it can appear he doesn't seem to do very much of it. But he is more observant and thoughtful than he lets on, sometimes. Other times he's just having fun.

Sirius is almost always happy, even while serving detention or being hexed. It takes a lot to bring him down, and when it does, you'll only probably know by the alcohol on his breath and previous knowledge of something that's happened.

He also has certain expectations. Although he is not a blood purist, Sirius grew up in a very well off family. Thus, he is not very well accustomed with physical labor and not getting what he wants. So when that happens, it surprises him, not in a pleasant way. Also, he can come off as if he expects the world to serve him and let him rest his feet atop it.

History.

Sirius was always different than the rest of his cousins and brother. He was louder, more blatantly didn't follow the rules, and to top it off was sorted into Gryffindor. For a few minutes, Sirius was disappointed, but he became fast friends with James Potter, who he had met on the train. Although he tried to stay on good terms with his brother, he was always on shaky (at best) terms with his counsins in Slytherin, and on horrible terms with the rest of them. And he immediately hated Snivellus Snape (as they nicknamed him).

Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew completed his core group of friends, though he also knew well the Gryffindor girls. They were like family, in a sense. But the four of them, the Marauders, they were completely tight knit. And despite his upbringing, once he knew Remus's "problem," he thought they should have fun together, become animagi. It was one of their two largest projects (the other being the map - bloody brilliant fun that was), took many years, and much of James and Sirius's concentration. They were fine in classes, no thanks to his work ethic, so their fun became the focus.

Their rivalry with Snape only grew, with many hexes and detentions on both sides. It culminated when Sirius sent him down the Whomping Willow toward Moony. But that time James disagreed with him and went after the fellow. Sirius didn't think until afterwards about what would have happened to Remus had James not done that.

He also devoted time to Quidditch, where he in time became a chaser. Every game was competitive but most so against Slytherin. Yet his work ethic again probably came to play when he was not named captain, even their final year. But he didn't care.

The most exciting summer was his last, when he was disowned after an argument with his mother. Sirius slammed everything into his trunk, left the house and went to James's, and was informed he was no longer a part of the family. It was fun to hang out with James, and his parents were like surrogate ones, but he was glad when his uncle gave him funds, including spotting a house in London he could buy. And Sirius had a home, his own, one that didn't spout anti-Muggle-born crap when he walked by.

Their final year was going to be great, the culmination of their time, when suddenly they were in the future, but mostly together. And there were no teachers, no adults. Fun times.
